- Belgians should brace for the worst, said Prime Minister Alexander de Croo on Monday, as fuel prices and electricity bills are expected to reach record highs soon.
- Electricity prices in Belgium – affected by surging prices in France and Germany – also reached a new record on Sunday of €561.94 per megawatt-hour (MWh) on the wholesale market, upping the 17 August record of €541per MWh.
- Price increases will have the biggest knock-on effects on households and businesses whose average annual electricity and gas bills could respectively reach €2,154.58 and €3,791.10 in August, Vreg, the Flemish electricity and gas market regulator, estimates.
