- Chancellor Olaf Scholz secured an agreement with Abu Dhabi on fresh natural gas shipments during his two-day Gulf visit over the weekend, though the pressure to address human rights issues remains high.
- Scholz visited the three Gulf regions of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar during his two-day trip from Saturday to Sunday as following Russia’s stopping of gas supplies to Germany, the scramble for new sources has intensified.
- This means Scholz is looking to the Gulf countries who have been questioned by the international community and in Germany for the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, for which the US secret services blame Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as well as for the treatment of migrant workers in Qatar ahead of this year’s football World Cup.
