KTRV upgrades missiles by conflict experience

MOSCOW, September 26. /TASS-DEFENSE/. The Tactical Missiles Corporation (KTRV) is a major producer of airborne, seaborne and ground-based missiles, underwater arms and space rocket equipment in Russia and the world. Its weapons are actively engaged in Ukraine. KTRV CEO Boris Obnosov told TASS about the upgrade of air-to-air missiles, the latest naval arms, and contribution to the development of the Northern Sea Route.

Missile upgrade

The KTRV has been constantly upgrading air-to-air missiles of the short, medium and long range according to combat experience since 1950s. It has improved the capabilities of highly maneuverable close air combat, such as the overload, angular speed of the hostile target, and other parameters. The short-range air-to-air missile operates by the fire-and forget principle and destroys targets maneuvering at a 12G overload from major angles of attack. The missile has a range of 40 km.

The medium-range air-to-air missile is a deep upgrade of RVV-AE missile. Its range increased from 80 to 110 km. It operates by the fire-and-forget principle, locks on targets and can change the target in flight.

The long-range missile was developed from R-33E and has much better characteristics. It also operates by the fire-and-forget principle and has a range of 200 km (against 120 km of R-33E) at altitudes of 15-25 km.

"We have considerably increased the firing range of air-to-air missiles and their precision due to more sensitive warheads, as well as maneuverability and overload they can sustain. The missiles are engaged against maneuvering manned and unmanned targets. All our missiles can destroy targets that maneuver with a major overload exceeding the overload a pilot can sustain," Obnosov said.

Naval arms

ET-1E is the first electric torpedo created in Russia. Trials were completed several years ago and the torpedo is supplied to the Navy. "It is a good product. Its advantages include high speed and range, the possibility to engage in any part of the World Ocean, including in shallow waters and under the Arctic and Antarctic ice, smooth speed regulation, low noise, and a possibility of continued upgrade of the torpedo and software," Obnosov said.

A priority task is to design super small homing torpedoes for a broad range of carriers. The KTRV is also designing a universal mine complex and has successfully completed the R&D. The result will be used to upgrade existing complexes.

Space and Arctic

The KTRV received Molniya enterprise in a very poor financial and economic state and is working to rehabilitate it. The design of a reusable orbital aircraft has been suspended and the enterprise will focus on target missiles.

"I hope we shall gradually drag it out and the enterprise will deal with advanced tasks," Obnosov said.

The KTRV pays major attention to civilian design for the Arctic. "Granit-Electron Concern offers a multi-band radio-electronic complex with fixed antennas for operation in a harsh climate in order to promote security of the Northern Sea Route. The project is being agreed with the Industry and Trade Ministry," he said.

The security of the Northern Sea Route is also ensured by the coastal monitoring system in the Arctic. The radio-electronic complex can operate in numerous frequency bands due to a single information network technology. The network coordinates marine cargo transportation and the operation of icebreakers and cuts short unsanctioned shipping.

The KTRV has demonstrated full-size devices to measure ice thickness, its accumulations and concentrations. Several test stations have been created for dual-purpose activities and the work is ongoing.
