  • The European Commission has defended its approach to the conservation of large carnivores after a coalition of member states called for a legislative overhaul to better protect livestock farming.
  • Wolves and other large carnivores are currently under strict protection according to the EU habitats directive.
  • Other signatories of the note also reported increases in the population of large carnivores, such as a tripling of bear and lynx populations in Finland since it entered the EU in 1995, as well as a 20-30% increase in France’s wolf population.
