Citizens, non-profits to sue Belgian state over nuclear reactor closure

  • Two non-profit organisations and hundreds of citizens are suing the Belgian State, nuclear operator Engie, and transmission system operator Elia in the name of security of energy supply.
  • On 16 September, the citizens’ non-profit organisation 100TWh also launched a legal action to prevent the implementation of the 2003 law on nuclear phase-out, calling the date set for the end of nuclear a “political deadline” and arguing that this is a threat to the security of supply, especially in the light of the war in Ukraine.
  • Which advocates for an energy mix composed of 50% nuclear energy to ensure the security of supply and the stability of prices, the government’s plans to rely on imports and gas are not a solution as both are unreliable sources of energy.
