LONDON, May 1, (WNM staff/Newswires) - British Prime Minister Theresa May has dismissed Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson due to unauthorized security leakage from a session of the National Security Council (NSC), the prime minister’s office reported on Wednesday.
“The Prime Minister has this evening asked Gavin Williamson to leave the Government, having lost confidence in his ability to serve in the role of Defense Secretary and as a member of her Cabinet. The Prime Minister’s decision has been informed by his conduct surrounding an investigation into the circumstances of the unauthorized disclosure of information from a meeting of the National Security Council,” the statement said.
The Guardian’s political correspondent Peter Walker says Theresa May “considers the matter closed” and there’s no need for a police investigation. Sky’s Alistair Bunkall writes on Twitter: "Spoken to Gavin Williamson. He swore on his children’s life to me that he didn’t leak the Huawei news and neither did his staff. Said he believes this is the settling of a vendetta between him and Mark Sedwill."
In a statement Williamson says that he was not involved “in any way” in this leak and that he accepts the assurances of his staff about their not being involved.
British Prime Minister Theresa May has appointed former Secretary of State for International Development Penny Mordaunt as new British Defense Secretary, according to a statement released by the prime minister’s office on Wednesday.
Queen Elizabeth II has been pleased to approve the appointment of Penny Mordaunt as Secretary of State for Defense, according to the statement.
