WASHINGTON, May 6 (WNM staff) - US-President Donald Trump tweeted on Sunday, that 10% tariffs paid by China on $200 billion in goods will rise to 25% on Friday, and that talks on a trade deal have been going too slowly. Trump also threatened to impose 25% tariffs on an additional $325 billion of Chinese goods “shortly.”

Trump wrote on Twitter:

"For 10 months, China has been paying Tariffs to the USA of 25% on 50 Billion Dollars of High Tech, and 10% on 200 Billion Dollars of other goods. These payments are partially responsible for our great economic results. The 10% will go up to 25% on Friday. 325 Billions Dollars of additional goods sent to us by China remain untaxed, but will be shortly, at a rate of 25%. The Tariffs paid to the USA have had little impact on product cost, mostly borne by China. The Trade Deal with China continues, but too slowly, as they attempt to renegotiate. No!"

The Financial Times writes:

"The aggressive tweets from Mr Trump mark a big shift in rhetoric from the US president on the trade negotiations with China, compared with consistently upbeat remarks about the state of the talks in recent weeks.

US business groups, which have mostly been pushing for a deal to end the trade war, reacted to Mr Trump’s threat of a new escalation with dismay. “We urge the president to refrain from imposing these additional tariffs and instead focus on negotiating and concluding the trade deal with China,” said Rick Helfenbein, president of the American Apparel and Footwear Association."
