Founded at COP21 and hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme, the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) is an international initiative focused on:
Catalysed by the GlobalABC and co-led by the German Development Corporation (GIZ), the French Development Agency (AFD), and the French Energy and Environmental Management Agency (ADEME), the Program for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB), works with its five first partner countries Mexico, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia and Vietnam to significantly transform the buildings sector by promoting sustainable building design and construction. The aim is to lower energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions to a minimum level.
PEEB combines financing for energy efficiency in large-scale projects with technical assistance. It supports partner countries to improve their policies and standards, fosters expertise among professionals in the private and public sector and mobilises innovative financing solutions for large building projects. PEEB supports the development of ambitious building energy codes that include improved building envelopes, as well as minimum energy performance standards (MEPS).
With 123 members, including 29 countries, the GlobalABC is the leading global platform for governments, the private sector, civil society and intergovernmental and international organizations to increase action towards a zero-emission, efficient and resilient buildings and construction sector.
The GlobalABC’s five Work Areas focus on education and awareness, public policies, market transformation, finance and building measurement, and data and information. Bringing together key national stakeholders to jointly transform the buildings and construction sector, the GlobalABC has sparked four national alliances for increased stakeholder coordination on climate action in France, Morocco, Mexico and Tunisia.
GlobalABC works collaboratively with its members, particularly country members, on its products and activities which include:
The GlobalABC engaged at the recent UNSG Summit through the Energy Track (Cool Coalition - buildings keep cool naturally) and the Infrastructure, cities and Local Action (ICLA) track (zero carbon buildings).
