MOSCOW, May 17. /TASS/. Russia offers major support to the United Nations in a dialogue on the peacekeeping activity and is an important partner for peacekeeping, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix told TASS on Friday.

"The Russian Federation is an important partner for peacekeeping, including through its permanent seat on the UN Security Council, financial contributions and the deployment of peacekeepers who serve in eight peace operations," the UN official said.

"The 8th Moscow Conference on International Security, where I am representing the Secretary-General, is a valuable forum to discuss today’s peace and security challenges and solutions with a wide array of partners and stakeholders. I am grateful to have the opportunity to discuss UN peacekeeping in this forum," he said.

"I also paid tribute to the memory of the 51 Russian peacekeepers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving under the UN flag since 1948," the under-secretary-general emphasized.

[Within the framework of the Moscow Conference] "I had very good meetings with several Russian officials, including in the Foreign and Defence ministries, during this visit, whom I thanked personally for Russia’s continued support. I also updated them on issues related to Peacekeeping, including the progress being made in the implementation of our Action for Peacekeeping initiative to strengthen the work we do," he told TASS.
