Volkswagen pushes battery partners to build Gigafactories

  • Volkswagen is pushing its joint venture partners including SK Innovation (SKI) to build electric car battery plants which have at least one Gigawatt manufacturing capacity, Chief Executive Herbert Diess told Reuters.
  • SKI will supply lithium-ion battery cells for an electric car that Volkswagen plans to start making in Chattanooga in 2022.
  • LG Chem, Samsung and SKI on will also supply battery cells for Volkswagen in Europe.

China car market reports signs of improvement in March

  • Vehicle sales in March were 2.52 million units, falling 5.18 percent year-on-year but increasing 70.09 percent compared with February.
  • Despite being a small part of the whole industry, commercial vehicles performed well in March reaching a new sales high with 500,600 units sold – a year-on-year increase of 2.36 percent and month-to-month increase of 91 percent.
  • In the first quarter, BAIC Group sold 573,000 units with an increase of 3.7 percent in the same period year-on-year.

Isle of Wight crash: Car ‘pulled out in front of bus’

  • A crash in which a woman died and 22 people were injured was caused by a car pulling out in front of a double-decker bus.
  • The collision involving the bus and two cars happened near Newport, Isle of Wight, at about 12:45 BST on Sunday.
  • Five Isle of Wight fire crews were sent to the scene, removing three people from one car as well as freeing the bus driver from his cab.

  • The market regulatory authority in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, has urged a local Mercedes-Benz dealer to give a customer a refund after she claimed the new car’s engine was defective on the day she bought it.
  • The market regulatory administration in Xi’an’s Gaoxin district-where the company is located-also urged the company on the same day to handle the complaint according to the law.
  • The woman’s eight requests on April 13 included demands for an investigation into the history of the car, an independent inspection of the vehicle, a formal apology from the Mercedes-Benz company and compensation for her psychological damage.
