What’s the best new car you can buy? 2020 Car of the Year shortlist driven and rated

  • Thirty new cars were eligible for this year’s Car Of The Year (Coty) award rather than the usual 70-odd after the application of more strict criteria, so the seven-strong shortlist represents a larger proportion (23 per cent) of the total than usual.
  • It drives well, the ride quality is better than the equivalent Renault Clio although the suspension designs are largely the same, and the 50kWh battery electric version has a WLTP range of 211 miles; the three-cylinder, 1.2-litre turbo petrol version is pretty good, too.
  • Surprisingly the Model 3 traversed the hard bumps and potholes of Silverstone well and comfortably – Tesla’s damping control has made huge strides since the first Model S. The steering was calm, well weighted and accurate, ditto the ride quality.
