Berlin eyes oil-fired ‘powerships’ to secure electricity for the winter

After securing five floating LNG terminals, Germany is doubling down on emergency energy infrastructure for the coming winter: floating power plants running on oil are expected to help balance the country’s electricity grid after Germany’s nuclear exit at the end of the year.
On Monday (5 September), German power grid operators published the results of their grid stress tests for the coming winter.
In the south where demand is highest, there are plenty of nuclear power and gas-fired power plants while in the North, where demand is lower, power generation is dominated by wind energy.
