The Green Brief: Breaking up (with Russian oil) is hard to do

  • Under changes made on Friday, Hungary and Slovakia would be able to buy Russian oil from pipelines until the end of 2024, and Czechia could continue until June 2024 if it does not get oil earlier via a pipeline from southern Europe.
  • Hungary and Slovakia are unhappy with the European Commission’s proposal to ban Russian black gold despite being given extra time to phase it out, while Bulgaria and the Czech Republic have jumped on the bandwagon and are now asking for special treatment.
  • Instead, putting energy savings and renewable energy at the heart of the EU’s energy strategy could significantly reduce the EU’s 2030 energy spend.
