- In the long term, however, Spain only decreased its total carbon emissions between 1990 and 2020 by 8%.
- Regarding energy, Spain was the sixth largest emitter between 2020 and 2021 and the fifth largest polluting EU country between 1990 and 2020, followed by Bulgaria, Estonia, Slovakia and Italy.
- To reach this target, industrial sectors must aim for a 61% drop in emissions compared to 2005 levels, while the transport, waste and residential sectors, amongst others, must eye a 40% reduction.
