- The Netherlands will pull out of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), which has come under fire for protecting investments in the oil and gas sector, the country’s energy ministry said on Wednesday (19 October).
- The European Commission acknowledged that the treaty had been rendered “obsolete” by the 2015 Paris Agreement to curb climate change and needed to be reformed.
- In June, the EU executive announced a breakthrough in talks to reform the ECT, which will be submitted for approval to all signatories in November.
