  • France’s High Climate Council has urged Paris and the EU to follow in the footsteps of the Netherlands and Spain by withdrawing from the Energy Charter Treaty, arguing that the international trade pact is “incompatible” with the EU’s green objectives.
  • In May, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain expressed doubts about the EU’s ability to bring the treaty into line with the Paris Agreement, and called on the European Commission to prepare for “possible exit scenarios in a timely manner”.
  • A Dutch government spokesperson, confirming the withdrawal, called on “the whole EU” to do the same, and so did French MEP Marie-Pierre Vedrenne.
