OTTAWA, July 1./TASS/. Canada reported 286 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the overall number of infections to 104,204, according to the country's Health ministry.
On Monday, the country reported 668 new cases. The ministry attributed such a sharp increase in infections to the fact that a number of regions published data immediately for the last three days, since they had not previously disclosed such statistics. In addition, in Ontario, the authorities conducted mass testing of foreign workers (mainly from Mexico) who came to work in seasonal farms in the south of the country. As a result testing, 177 infected were revealed.
A total of 8,591 deaths were registered in Canada. According to the health ministry, over 90% of them were over 60 years of age.
On May 11, the overall number of recoveries for the first time exceeded the number of infections, with almost 67,600 people recovering.
Canada reported its first coronavirus case on January 15. Cases are reported from 12 out of 13 Canadian territories, meanwhile, the most infections are reported in Quebec (54,835) and Ontario (33,637). Over 2.7 million people have been tested for coronavirus in Canada. On June 29, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the country was making progress in fighting the virus but warned that the danger was yet to pass.
On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. According to the latest statistics, over 10,429,000 people have been infected worldwide and more than 508,400 deaths have been reported.
