Mexico’s coronavirus deaths top 20,700

MEXICO CITY, July 1. /TASS/. The number of coronavirus fatalities in Mexico increased by 648 in the past 24 hours, which is 175 deaths more than one day before, a press conference attended by head epidemiologist of the national health ministry Jose Luis Alomia noted on Tuesday.The total number of deaths among patients exceeded 27,700 since February 28, he said.

"Unfortunately, 27,769 people died," he said. His speech was broadcast on the official website of the ministry.

Over the past 24 hours, the number of infected reached 226,089; experts identified another 5,432 cases of infection, which is 1,627 higher than the rate recorded on Monday.

Although in June the country recorded an average of more than 4,000 cases daily, so far in 18 of its 32 regions, including Mexico City, the level of the epidemic threat has been reduced from maximum ("red") to high ("orange"). This allows the country to start resuming various types of economic activity, suspended due to the spread of infection.

On Monday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the pandemic in the country is nearing completion.

Mexico officially reported its first coronavirus infection on February 28. The national government on March 30 announced a state of emergency in healthcare and suspended all non-essential activities. On June 1, businesses started slowly reopening in Mexico even though the overwhelming majority of regions in the country still had the highest level of epidemiological threat.

On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. According to the latest statistics, over 10,429,000 people have been infected worldwide and more than 508,400 deaths have been reported. In addition, so far, over 5,689,000 individuals have recovered from the illness across the globe.
