Azerbaijan reports 279 new COVID-19 cases, six fatalities in past day

BAKU, August 1. /TASS/. One-day coronavirus cases have risen by 278 in Azerbaijan in the past day, down by 39 compared with Friday, bringing the total to 32,157, the governmental crisis center said in a statement on Saturday.

The daily coronavirus infection rate has lowered below 300 for the first time since June 3.

According to the crisis center, 592 patients were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours. A total of 26,474 recoveries have been recorded so far, or 82.3% of all the cases. A total of 5,229 patients are being treated in hospitals.

"Over the past 24 hours, six people with positive coronavirus tests died," the statement says. On Friday, seven deaths were reported. Azerbaijan's death toll climbed to 454. The country carried out 732,236 coronavirus tests, with 7,283 of them in the past 24 hours.

Azerbaijan extended strict lockdown measures until August 31 due to the epidemic situation. Capital Baku and 13 other major cities and regions, which account for the largest number of cases, will be quarantined until August 5.

In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus - named COVID-19 by the WHO - have been reported in every corner of the globe, including Russia. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
