Tajikistan confirms 7,451 coronavirus cases

DUSHANBE, August 1. /TASS/. Tajikistan has registered 42 new coronavirus cases in the past day, bringing the total to 7,451, the Ministry for Health and Social Protection of the Population said on Saturday.

According to the health ministry, no fatalities were registered in the country. The death toll stands at 60. The ministry added that 6,233 patients recovered from the disease, which makes 83.6% of all the cases. In the past 24 hours, 40 patients were discharged from hospitals, while 95 people remain under medical supervision.

The coronavirus situation is gradually stabilizing in Tajikistan, with about 50 new cases registered each recent day. The first 15 coronavirus cases were confirmed in Tajikistan on April 30. The country began to lift the quarantine restrictions on June 15, reopening non-food markets, shopping malls, hotels, public catering outlets and beauty parlors. Nevertheless, wearing face coverings is compulsory in public places, transport, stores and health institutions, with fines introduced for violators.

In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus - named COVID-19 by the WHO - have been reported in every corner of the globe, including Russia. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
