Canada reports fewer than 300 new coronavirus cases in past 24 hours

OTTAWA, August 2. /TASS/. The number of coronavirus infections in Canada rose by 287 in the past 24 hours to reach 116,599, the national health ministry said Saturday.

On Friday, the ministry recorded 513 new cases. In total, the country reported 8,941 coronavirus-related fatalities, six more patients died in the past 24 hours. Earlier, the health agency acknowledged that more than 90% of the deaths were people aged over 60. Meanwhile, more than 101,400 patients fully recovered from COVID-19.

Canada reported its first coronavirus case on January 15. The most infections are reported from Quebec (59,073) and Ontario (38,986). Canada tested almost 4.1 million people for the virus.

On June 29, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada is making great progress in the fight against coronavirus, but the danger is yet to pass. According to him, the nation is ready for a second coronavirus wave. Trudeau underlined that the statistic is showing constant decrease in coronavirus infections and deaths, while some Canadian regions are not reporting any at all.

In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus - named COVID-19 by the WHO - have been reported in every corner of the globe. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
