BOGOTA, August 2. /TASS/. The Colombian health ministry reported 10,673 new confirmed coronavirus cases on Saturday, bringing the total to 306,181.
"On August 1, we confirmed recovery of 6,321 patients, 10,673 new infections and 225 fatalities in Colombia. Overall, the number of recovered patients reached 160,708, COVID-19 infections went up to 306,181, while deaths stands at 10,330," the agency said via Twitter.
Since the pandemic broke out, Bogota recorded 104,656 cases in total.
Colombia reported its first coronavirus case on March 6. On March 17, Colombian President Ivan Duque imposed a state of emergency for 30 days due to the pandemic. Later, the authorities decided to suspend international air travel to curb the spread of the virus and enacted a nationwide lockdown between March 24 and April 13 and later extended it to September 1.
In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus - named COVID-19 by the WHO - have been reported in every corner of the globe. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
