Mexico reports more than 9,500 new coronavirus cases in past 24 hours

MEXICO CITY, August 2. /TASS/. Mexico has confirmed more than 434,000 coronavirus infections, head epidemiologist of the national health ministry Jose Luis Alomia told a press conference Saturday.

In the past 24 hours, Mexican medical professionals identified 9,556 more infections, the highest daily number since the pandemic began in late February.

"Currently, we have 434,193 laboratory-confirmed infections in total," Alomia noted.

Overall, 47,472 coronavirus patients died in the country. In the past 24 hours, 784 more coronavirus-related fatalities were reported, an increase of 96 compared to Friday.

"In the past two weeks, the trend for decreasing number of deaths is observed," the head epidemiologist stressed. Meanwhile, 284,847 people recovered.

Medical facilities across the country are currently 45% loaded, the number of hospital beds equipped with ventilators in ICUs are higher than 60%.

In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus - named COVID-19 by the WHO - have been reported in every corner of the globe. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
