Azerbaijan reports 105 new COVID-19 cases, five fatalities in past day

BAKU, August 8. /TASS/. One-day coronavirus cases have risen by 105 in Azerbaijan in the past day, down by 24 compared with Friday, the governmental crisis center said in a statement on Saturday.

"Azerbaijan has registered 105 new coronavirus cases. The country has a total of 33,481 cases, or 0.3 percent of the country's entire population of some ten million. The number of new one-day cases is 0,001%. The basic reproduction number (R0, a rate at which a disease is capable of spreading in a population - TASS) is 1.8 for the past eight days," the statement says.

According to the crisis center, 360 patients were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours. A total of 30,056 recoveries have been recorded so far, or 89.8% of all the cases. A total of 2,937 patients are being treated in hospitals.

"Over the past 24 hours, five people with positive coronavirus tests died," the statement says. On Friday, four deaths were reported. Azerbaijan's death toll climbed to 488. The country carried out 779,508 coronavirus tests, with 6,457 of them in the past 24 hours.

The first coronavirus case was confirmed in Azerbaijan on February 28, with the peak reached at the beginning of the summer. The largest number of one-day cases - 590 - was documented on June 24. Since late June, more than 500 new cases had been registered daily. Since July 16, they began declining and on August 5, the daily indicator went down below 200 cases.

Azerbaijan extended strict lockdown measures until August 31 Capital Baku and 13 other major cities and regions, which account for the largest number of cases, will be quarantined until August 5.
