MOSCOW, August 13. /TASS/. The number of coronavirus cases in the Czech Republic surpassed 19,000, the country's Ministry of Health said on Thursday.
Over the past day, Czech doctors have identified 292 coronavirus cases. Experts noted an increase in the daily rate of detected patients since the second half of July, which signifies complications with the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the country.
Since March 1, when the first coronavirus case was detected in the country, the total number of people infected in the Czech Republic was 19,075, including those who recovered. Over the past five and a half months, 391 people died from complications caused by the virus, 13,407 have recovered.
In the Czech Republic, with a population of about 10.7 mln people, 767,598 tests for coronavirus were carried out during the pandemic. Over the past 24 hours, 7,978 residents of the republic have been tested.
In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus - named COVID-19 by the WHO - have been reported in every corner of the globe, including Russia. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
