  • The virus is faster than we can ever be in adapting vaccines, Marco Cavaleri, head of health threats and vaccines strategy at the European Medicines Agency (EMA), told MEPs on Wednesday (October 26).
  • This follows Friday’s news from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on the spread of new sub-lineages of the Omicron variant named BQ.1, which while originating from the BA.5 variant, is able to evade BA.5-targeted antibodies.
  • Now the ECDC has made it clear they expect BQ.1 and its sub-lineages — all originating from BA.5 — to cause more than 80% of infections at the beginning of 2023.
