  • Lawmakers and stakeholders have criticised the European Commission for not emphasising the potential impact of its proposal to halve both the use and risk of chemical pesticides by 2030 on food production.
  • After some delays due to the disruption caused by Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the Commission unveiled its regulation proposal, including a 50% EU-wide reduction target made up of varying national targets.
  • For many lawmakers, Owen-Griffith’s presentation did not sufficiently address one of the main concerns: the potential impact of a reduction in plant protection products on yields and food security, especially in the context of the pressure on global markets caused by the Ukraine war.
