<span>Health of Turkey’s plastic waste workers under threat as European imports grow </span>

  • Workers at plastic recycling plants, including child workers and nearby residents, are being exposed to serious health risks as the Turkish government fails to enforce laws on licensing and inspections.
  • In 2020, the EU exported 447,432 tonnes of plastic waste to Turkey, a 1,200% increase from the 33,804 tonnes sent in 2016 and nearly half the EU’s waste plastic exports.
  • It found workers and local residents were not provided with basic information about levels of toxins in their environment or the risks from exposure, despite laws requiring the authorities and companies to monitor and share such information.
