  • Food shops suffered their first annual fall in December sales in six years as shoppers counted the pennies this Christmas.
  • December is usually a time for feasting, but food shops’ sales dropped 1.3pc month-on-month and 0.7pc compared with the same period of 2018 – the first annual December drop since 2013.
  • This helped boost overall retail sales by 0.9pc compared to December 2018, though this remains a weak annual growth rate by historical standards.
