UK consumers cut back on spending again, adding to economic gloom

  • British consumers failed to increase their spending in December for a record fifth month in a row.
  • Annual growth in retail sales volumes dropped to 0.9 per cent, below all forecasts in the Reuters poll.
  • This year’s December survey period ran from November 24th to December 28th, including the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales promotions and the December 12th election which gave prime minister Boris Johnson a big win.
