Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100 GMT, Sept. 18

BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the food and beverage sectors leading the gain.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index increased 0.25 percent to close at 2,985.66 points, while the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.31 percent higher at 9,753.31 points.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 36.12 points, or 0.13 percent, to 26,754.12 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 26,730.63 and 26,891.16. Turnover totaled 59.51 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 7.60 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday, as some investors were reluctant to make bold moves ahead of the the conclusion of the Federal Reserve's two-day policy-setting meeting later in the day.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 40.61 points, or 0.18 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 21,960.71.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.51 percent, or 16.16 points, to close at 3,166.84.

A total of 905.12 million shares changed hands with a turnover of 914.04 million Singapore dollars (about 664.76 million U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 196 to 166.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,599.49 down 4.81 points or 0.30 percent, and the Emas was at 11,299.47 down 22.22 points or 0.20 percent.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 995.15 points on Wednesday, down 1.59 points, or 0.16 percent against the previous trading day.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.21 percent lower on Wednesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 16.94 points to 7,915.29. The all-share index went down by 7.77 points, or 0.16 percent, to 4,786.43.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 8.40 points, or 0.41 percent, to settle at 2,070.73. Trading volume stood at 590.7 million shares worth 4.6 trillion won (3.9 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market finished firmly lower on Wednesday with energy shares undergoing a reversal and financials also weighing.

At the market close the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was down 13.70 points or 0.20 percent at 6,681.60, while the broader All Ordinaries index was down 10.50 points or 0.15 percent at 6,791.20.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed higher on a positive note Wednesday.

Except pharma, all other sectoral indices ended in the green, led by the metal, IT, infra, energy, auto and bank.

JAKARTA, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia shares closed higher by 39.94 points, or 0.64 percent, to a level of 6,276.63 on Wednesday.

Some 588,887 transactions were booked, involving 13.3 billion copies of shares with a value of 7.4 trillion rupiah (about 526.1 million U.S. dollars).
