TOKYO, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Thursday as the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar dented sentiment and weighed on exporters, while regional political tensions also added to a risk-off mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 178.32 points, or 0.76 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 23,141.55.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 15.93 points, or 0.94 percent, to finish at 1,684.40.

The majority of industry categories closed in negative territory, with pulp and paper, textile and apparel, and rubber product-linked issues comprising those that declined the most by the close of play.
