BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.81 percent, at 2,898.58 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.21 percent higher at 11,052.85 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 641.52 billion yuan (about 90.47 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 731.8 billion yuan seen in the previous trading day.
Gainers outnumbered losers 995 to 396 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,522 to 579 in Shenzhen.
Shares related to photoresist materials performed strongly, with Shanghai Phichem Material Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to end at 21.81 yuan per share.
Companies in the sectors of gold, pork and beer led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.38 percent to close at 2,144.12 points Tuesday.
