This is the data protection policy for world-news-monitor.com, which explains how World News Monitor (“WNM”), manages your personal information. Please read on how we use personal information, how it affects your privacy and how to safeguard your rights below.
Personal data we collect
WNM collects data in order for our services to work efficiently and to provide you with the best possible experience. Some of this data you provide us directly in connection with our customer relationship, such as when you create an account in an application, administer your user account for a service, purchase a product in our stores, sign up for an event, buy a magazine or newspaper subscription, download an app, or register as a user, sign up for a newsletter, or contact us for support.
We can also retrieve information from third parties. Data retrieved from third parties is protected by the methods described in this Privacy Notice and any further restrictions that apply to the source and scope of the information. Such third party sources may vary over time but have previously included:
- Data brokers that we purchase demographic and statistical data from, in order to check the quality of and complement the information we collect, such as mailing addresses.
- Social networks, when you allow a WNM product access to your information in one or several social networks.
- Partners we work with to provide services or in joint marketing campaigns.
- Public sources, for example from government databases or other data that’s openly available for the general public.
You can make choices regarding information collected by us. When you are asked to submit personal information, you can choose to decline. However, if you choose not to provide any information necessary to access a product, service, or feature, there is a risk that you will not be able to use the specific product or feature. The information we collect depends on the context of your interactions with WNM, your choices, including your privacy settings, and the products and features you use. The data collected may include the following:
- Name and contact information, first and last name, email address, postal address, telephone number, delivery information and other similar contact information.
- Authentication information, password, social security or other government ID number, and other similar security information used for authentication and account access.
- Demographic data, information about you such as age, gender, country and language setting.
- Payment data, necessary information to process your payment for any purchases, including the number associated with payment method (such as credit card number) and associated security code.
- Device and usage data, data about your device, and how you and your device interact with WNM and our products. For example, product usage information, which means we collect data about the features you use, items you buy and the webpages you visit. These also include the settings you choose and the software configurations you use most. We also collect information about the device, connection and configuration, that is, data about the device and network that you use to connect to our services. It may also include operating system information, as well as IP address, device ID (for example, IMEI phone number), national settings and language settings.
- Interests and favourites, data about your interests and favourites, such as stocks you follow in a financial app; your favourites among the news articles you save in your profile in your account for your magazine subscription; favourite products that you add to a shopping cart. In addition to those you explicitly provide, your interests and favorites may also be derived from or linked to other information we collect.
We also save information you provide us and the content of messages you send to us, such as feedback you write, or questions and information you provide us. Note that if you request us not to contact you by email, we will keep a copy of the email address in our mailing lists to ensure that you do not receive unwanted email messages.
How we use personal information
We use information that we collect about our customers and users for the following main purposes, described in detail below:
- A secure customer register where we can ensure that your information and preferences as a WNM customer are accurate, up-to-date and used for limited purposes, and that we can also offer you an easy way to access your rights and request your personal information from us at WNM.
- Analysis that ensures your privacy, so that we can improve existing products for you as a customer and provide personalized digital services tailored to you.
- Analysis that ensures your privacy, so that we can conduct relevant direct marketing and telemarketing campaigns to you for similar goods and services.
- Analysis that ensures your privacy, so that we, together with our advertisers and where permitted by you or where permitted by law, can direct relevant advertising to you in our services and websites that are supported by advertising.
Supply and improve our products and services
WNM uses data to provide and improve the products we offer and perform necessary business operations. This includes managing the products, maintaining and improving product performance, developing new features, conducting research and providing customer support. Examples of such use include the following:
Provide products and services. We use data to deliver your purchases with us and to provide you with our products and services. In some cases, the products and services of WNM have customized content and features that automatically tailor your experience based on our information about your activities, interests and where we have obtained your consent or it is allowed by law or agreement, including your geographical position.
The data is analyzed and grouped for selection, prioritization and planning of contacts with the customer/user. The data is connected to one or more markers that are linked to the type of customization of web services and market communication directed at the user, so-called personalization.
Product Improvement. We use data to improve our existing products and services, including updating features. For example, we use bug reports to improve security features; user behavior, search queries and clicks on our sites to improve relevancy for search results, content on websites, and placement of relevant content for you on our sites.
Security. We use data to safeguard the security of our products, services and customers as well as to detect and prevent fraud, to confirm the validity of software licenses and to resolve disputes and to enforce our agreements. We can also block delivery of a message or remove content if it violates our terms of agreement.
Business/Business Intelligence. WNM uses data to develop aggregated analyses and business intelligence, which together with our analysis function, enable us to run and protect our business and to make informed decisions. For example, we store data that we collect when a user is not logged in (authenticated) separately from customer-specific account information that identifies you, such as your name, email address, or phone number. We use mainly anonymous data that does not consist of personal data when analyzing customer insights, product development, personalization, trends, statistics and similar purposes. That we maintain a centrally coordinated and quality-assured analytical function in WNM ensures the correct and secure handling of our customers’ personal data for permitted purposes, which are described in more detail in this policy.
Personalized services. In some cases, WNM’s products and services have customized content and features that automatically tailor your experience based on our information about your activities, interests and where we have obtained your consent or where supported by law or agreement, including your geographical position. The data is analyzed and grouped based on our analysis function at WNM for selection, prioritization and scheduling of contacts with the customer/user so that you get personalized services and offers that you may be interested in. The data is connected to one or more markers that are linked to the type of customization of web services and market communication directed at the user, so-called personalization.
Communication. We use data to communicate with you. For example, we may contact you by email, phone, or other means to let you know when a subscription is about to expire, notify you when security updates are available, remind you about items left in your shopping cart, update you around a customer support issue, inform you that you need to take an action to keep your account active. Marketing and advertising. We use the data you provide to us when registering user accounts, as well as the data we collect when you make purchases and use our services and websites, to provide you with relevant marketing and advertising that you may be interested in when you visit our websites, listen to our podcasts and subscribe to our newsletters. The data is analyzed and grouped based on our analysis function at WNM. This enables us to target interest-based advertising to you as a customer and when you visit our websites. When you visit our websites, some of the cookies we place on your computer will be advertising cookies, so we can understand what types of pages you’re interested in. We can then show recommendations for products and services or ads on your browser based on these perceptions of interest. For example, if you showed a particular interest in travel, you may get more ads for travel and related services and products.
It is important to keep in mind that none of the technology we use for interest-based advertising collects information about your name, address, email address or phone number.
The ads you see on our sites can be selected based on data about you that we process, such as your interests and favorites, your position (if you give us your permission to use this data), your transactions, how you use our products and services, search queries or content you see. The ads can also be selected based on other information that we find out about you over time using demographics, location data (where allowed), search queries, interests and favorites, usage data from our products, services and websites, and from our advertisers and partners’ websites and apps. If you choose to unsubscribe from interest-based advertising, data associated with these cookies will not be used.
We can also share anonymous behavioral data about our users with our advertisers and partners, including companies sponsoring content labeled with “Sponsored by,” “Paid Content/Paid By,” or “Content From Advertisers/From Our Advertisers.” Anonymous data is information that cannot be linked to an individual, where we have removed all references and links to our users. This means that when you visit other sites, you may see display advertising based on your behavior on our websites. Our affiliates can also show ads on our sites based on your behavior on other sites.
Behavioral marketing, so-called retargeting, is another form of interest-based advertising that allows our affiliates and some of their advertisers to advertise to you based on your reading and click patterns on a website outside the WNM’s websites. For example, if you have visited a website for a fashion store, you may see ads from the same store that show offers or the products you’ve watched. This enables companies to target ads to you if you leave their website without making a purchase.
If you choose to refrain from receiving interest-based advertising, it does not mean that you will no longer see advertisements on our websites, rather the advertisements displayed will no longer be customized for you and therefore will seem less relevant. Advertising on mobile devices may require collection and sharing of the unique device number with companies that purchase ad space on our mobile applications.
Other advertising. Our websites contain links to other sites for which we may be reimbursed. Our affiliates’ articles are not influenced by advertisers or marketing partners, nor are they written for the purpose of promoting a product, except where it is explicitly stated that the content is “sponsored by,” “provided by,” “presented by,” “Paid Content/Paid By,” or “Advertiser Content/From Our Advertisers,” or similar notations that denote sponsored content and advertising.
Other purposes. If we plan to use personal data for a new purpose outside what is described in this policy, you will be informed of such use before or in connection with the collection of personal data, and we will ask you for your consent. Alternatively, we will ask for your consent after collection, but before we will use your personal information for a new purpose.
Reasons for sharing your personal information
Sometimes it may be necessary for us to share your information with other companies that provide services on our behalf (such as housing our servers or providing support services) so that we can provide you with our services.
In cases where we share information about you with others, we have confirmed that these companies comply with our data protection requirements and are not allowed to use the personal data they receive for any other purpose.
We share information with companies that we have hired to provide customer service support or assistance with safeguarding and securing our systems and services, who need access to personal data in order to provide these services. We may also disclose personal information as part of a joint venture, such as a merger or sale of assets.
Finally, we may need to disclose or save your information when we consider it necessary to:
- Follow the law or legal process and provide information to the police and other relevant law enforcement authorities.
- Protect our customers, for example, to prevent spam or fraud, or to facilitate the prevention of death or serious injury.
- Manage and maintain the security of our products, including preventing or stopping an attack on our systems or networks.
- Protect the rights or property of WNM, including enforcing the terms governing your use of our services; but if we obtain information that someone is using our services to trade stolen intellectual or physical property belonging to WNM, we will not investigate a customer’s private data ourselves, rather we would then transfer the matter to a law enforcement authority.
How to access and control your personal data
You can review, edit and delete your personal information online for many of the products and services we provide through your user account for your service. You may also make choices regarding WNM’s processing and use of your information.
If you choose to refrain from receiving interest-based advertising, it does not mean that you will no longer see advertisements on our websites, rather the advertisements displayed will not be appropriate for you and therefore, seem less relevant. To the extent that the information used for interest-based advertising is also used for other necessary purposes (including for providing our products, analysis, and fraud detection), the collection of such information will continue even if you choose not to receive interest-based advertising.
Your individual rights
WNM complies with current data protection laws of the European Union, which, where appropriate, include the following rights:
- You are free to request a registry extract (as defined in the law), and access to a copy of your personal data, request a correction and, in certain circumstances, deletion of your personal data.
- You are entitled to request limiting and to oppose the processing of your personal information that we collect for our legitimate interest.
- You have the right to file complaints with a data protection authority.
- If the processing of personal data is based on your consent, you are entitled to withdraw your consent for future processing of your personal information at any time.
When processing your personal information, we do it in order to offer you the products and services that you use and have ordered, to operate our business, to meet our contractual and legal obligations, to protect our systems and customers, or to meet the legitimate interests as described in detail in the sections “How We Use Your Personal Information” and “Reasons For Sharing Your Personal Information” above. When we transfer personal data from the European Union, we do it based on a number of legal mechanisms, as described in the section “Where We Save and Process Personal Information,” below.
To what extent do we use automated decision making (including profiling) to make decisions?
As a general rule, we do not make decisions based on automated processing and profiling that will have legal ramifications for you as defined in Article 22 GDPR. If in the future we would use such procedures on a case-by-case basis, we will inform you separately and request your consent before such new use of your personal data would occur, to the extent required by law.
Information about your right to object pursuant to Article 21 of the GDPR (profiling, direct marketing)
1. Processing of your personal information done because of our legitimate interests.
You have the right at any time to object, for reasons relating to your particular situation, to our processing of personal data about you based on Article 6.1 (f) GDPR (processing for the purpose of protecting our legitimate interests), which includes profiling based on those provisions within the context of Article 4 (4) of the GDPR.
If you make an objection, we will no longer process your personal information if your interests, right and freedoms outweigh our legitimate reasons for processing such information that outweighs your interests, rights and freedoms; or if our processing is not for the determination, exercise or defense of legal claims.
2. Right to object to data processing for marketing purposes
In some cases, we process your personal information for direct marketing and marketing over the phone. You are entitled to object to the processing of personal data about yourself for such marketing at any time, including profiling to the extent that it is related to such direct marketing.
If you oppose direct marketing efforts, we will no longer process your personal information for such purposes.
If you choose to oppose processing that includes profiling of your personal interests and behaviors or refrain from receiving interest-based advertising, it does not mean that you will no longer see advertisements on our sites and services, rather the advertisements displayed will not be adapted to you and therefore will seem less relevant.

Security for your personal information
WNM uses a range of security techniques and security methods to protect your personal data from unauthorized access, unwanted changes and data loss. For example, the personal information that you provide is stored on computer systems that have limited access and are in protected premises. When transferring very sensitive data (such as credit card number and password) via the internet, these data are protected by encryption.
Where we store and process personal information
Personal data managed by WNM can be stored and processed in the region in which you live, or in other countries where WNM, our partners or suppliers are active. We take steps to ensure that the information we collect in accordance with this Privacy Notice is dealt with in accordance with the provisions of this policy and in accordance with applicable laws where the information is available.
If for reasons we share your information under “Reasons We Share Your Personal Information” that we would transfer your personal data to a personal data controller or a personal data assistant in third countries, i.e. countries outside the EU/EEA, we will enter into agreements and take other measures in accordance with applicable legal requirements. We will use EU standard clauses as appropriate security measures or use companies that are certified under Privacy Shield.
Our retention of personal information
WNM retains personal information as long as it is necessary to provide the products and services, fulfill the transactions you have requested and approved, or for other necessary purposes, such as complying with our legal obligations, resolving disputes and enforcing our agreements. Because these needs may vary for different types of data and for different types of products, services and contexts, actual retention periods may vary. Criteria that determine how long we store data are, for example:
How long are personal data needed to provide the products and services? This includes, among other things, maintaining and improving the performance of products and services, protecting our systems and administering necessary business and accounting information. This is the general rule underlying the calculation of most retention periods.
Is there an automated function, such as in the user’s customer account at WNM, that customers can use to access and delete personal data at any time? If there is no such feature, a shorter retention period is usually used.
Is the personal information particularly sensitive? In that case, a shorter retention period is usually used.
Has WNM received and been informed about a specific retention period for a particular type of data? Data on online behavior on WNM’ websites and digital services is saved for 30 days, after which this data is anonymized.
We save customer data about our customers for a period of 24 months after our customer relationship has expired, or earlier if the customer chooses to terminate his account at WNM and/or requests that personal data be deleted.
Have users approved the use of a longer conservation period? In that case, we store the information in accordance with your consent.
Does WNM have legal or contractual obligations or otherwise is committed to storing the information? Examples may be mandatory legislation on retention of information in certain jurisdictions, government orders to preserve data relevant to investigations, or data that must be retained in order to resolve a dispute.
