Taiwan Chipmaker UMC Invests $500 Million More in Mainland Factory

  • Despite uncertainty about China’s economic outlook amid the coronavirus outbreak, Taiwan chipmaker United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) announced Tuesday it will go ahead with a planned 3.5 billion yuan ($501 million) investment in a Chinese mainland manufacturing subsidiary.
  • The funding for a second-phase expansion of the factory based in the Fujian province city of Xiamen will bring UMC’s total investment to 11.8 billion yuan.
  • The project has a planned total investment of around 43 billion yuan.
