  • China’s white-hot group grocery-buying market is getting even busier despite toughening regulatory scrutiny as discount e-commerce specialist Pinduoduo Inc. made a new foray into Shanghai.
  • Alibaba, which operates grocery unit Freshippo; Meituan Dianping, which runs grocery platform Meituan Youxuan; and Tencent-backed startup Xingsheng Youxuan have all plunged into the sector to tap the growing demand for door-to-door fresh food deliveries to people stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Since testing the service in central cities Nanchang and Wuhan in August, Pinduoduo quickly expanded the business into more than 100 cities in 25 provinces.
