VIENNA, May 20 (WNM staff) - After the scandalous video about an alleged Russian oligarch and the fall of FPÖ leader Heinz Christian Strache, a government of unelected bureaucrats is emerging in Austria. Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz also wanted to dismiss the Interior Minister Herbert Kickl, a right wing hardliner within the FPÖ. In protest against this step, all FPÖ ministers have resigned. The vacant positions are to be filled by experts and top officials. Kurz said in Vienna on Monday evening that this would leave the government able to act.
But Kurz himself also came under pressure on Monday to give up his post. The opposition Social Democrats (SPÖ) want a complete technokrat government. SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner declared after her conversation with the Federal President that the SPÖ was in favour of stability, but demanded that all ministries and also the position of Chancellor be filled with experts.
