AMSTERDAM, November 25 (WNM) - Multinational oil and gas company Royal Dutch Shell is going to a Scottish Court to ban Greenpeace protest near or on their platforms in the Brent oil field. The injunction came after protest by Greenpeace in October, writes NOS.
A ban on dumping installations and platforms in the North East Atlantic ocean was agreed in 1998 by all members of the OSPAR Commission (https://www.ospar.org/). Shell has requested an exemption from the UK government.
In October, Greenpeace protested against Shell’s plans to leave parts of four old oil rigs in the North Sea, when climbers scaled the rigs Brent Alpha and Bravo and hung banners saying, ‘Shell, clean up your mess!’ and ‘Stop Ocean Pollution’. Three of those rigs contain over 11.000 tonnes of oil, which will eventually end up in the sea, according to Greenpeace (https://www.greenpeace.org/international/press-release/27265/right-to-protest-under-legal-threat-from-shell/).
